Emily

I could see from the minute I first met Emily, that she was confident. When making our group, she was the first to make a connection and lead the group in the right direction. I noticed her kind smile, which happens to be the first thing she notices about someone as well. I also assumed that her confidence may be due to the fact that she was not a freshman like many of us in here. After speaking to her more, I discovered that she is a sophomore, and a lovely individual.

After trying out another school last year, she decided to come to UD for the Health Behavioral Science major. Upon arriving, she began to live with a roommate, and considers herself to be pretty clean, even spotless out of consideration for her. Emily’s family however is considering a big move to Florida where her brother, 4 years her senior, works at Disney world, (where she also happens to have spent her most memorable birthday!) This move may mean another transfer is a possibility for Emily, which she is not exactly ecstatic about. She wants to meet as many new people as possible at her new school, and I can already tell she will be just fine, as she’s easy to get along with and forms connections quickly. She’s also very creative and enjoys painting, something one may not be able to guess upon first meeting her. Also when asked if she could have lunch with anyone living or dead, after some deliberation, Emily landed on Steve Carell. Which in my opinion, describes her pretty well.

Shannon

Upon first glance at Shannon I noticed her thick, well-cared-for brown hair, deep brown eyes, and bubbly personality. But Shannon’s true qualities and quirks go beyond the surface of what the eye can see, and it was my pleasure to get to know her.

Shannon Burke is not originally from Delaware, unlike me. Home for her is in Connecticut, about 30 minutes outside of Hartford. Interestingly enough, Shannon is actually an identical twin. Both Shannon and her sister are looking forward to their 19th birthday in a few upcoming weeks in late February. Her sister also attends UD, yet they decided to opt out of living together because they were concerned they would fight frequently! Instead, Shannon lives in Harrington with a roommate, who, consequently, is also named Shannon.

At the University of Delaware, Shannon has decided to study elementary education. She was influenced to pursue this path by her mother who is also a teacher. She had chosen the elementary age group because she wants to set children up for future success. She is already having the opportunity to work with young students in her Education 205 class, where she gets to visit after school programs and speak with students. She is very excited about this upcoming adventure!

Shannon #2

A freshman Early Childhood Education major from Connecticut, Shannon Burke aspires to teach the minds of young children in the future. Her mother, who is a teacher, has been a large inspiration in her life. Shannon has an identical twin who also attends UD but instead aspires to learn about the mind as a psychology major. Shannon sometimes gets confused as her twin on campus. Her roommate is not her sister because of the inevitable arguments, but it is another girl who happens to also have the name, Shannon.

Her favorite movie is Silver Linings Playbook and right now, she is watching the Handmaids Tale on Netflix. She has two dogs and two cats back at home. In her spare time, she enjoys listening to music, specifically indie pop. She said that she can’t go a day without listening to music on Spotify premium. I learned that she is involved in the radio show on campus where she plays the music that she likes for others to hear. In high school, she was a part of the Colorguard and played the violin. Her nationality is Irish and Italian. Her favorite food is a cheeseburger and her favorite cuisine is Italian. Over the break, she worked at Red Lobster as a host.

Being that she went to a small high school, she was eager to come to a big school like UD. She enjoys the dining hall, Caesar Rodney, and her favorite UDairy flavor is cinnamon toast crunch.

I enjoyed taking the time to get to know some things that make Shannon who she is. I discovered that she is a friendly person and easy to talk to. I now have a new friend from English 110.
