At first this assignment seemed a little bit creepy to me, I found it odd to watch other people, even strangers, communicate with each other. However I decided to press on, as I realized they would have no idea of what I was doing anyway. I was sitting in Perkins, when two people sat down right next to me, conducting a job interview. They were both pretty young, and the girl who was being interviewed was around 20. It was strange to hear someone so close to my own age acting so professionally. She did not use any of the slang common in our own generation, yet she was maybe a little nervous as she tapped her hand on the table. I began then to pay attention to the interviewer. He was calm, and clearly believed he held the authority in the situation, as he spoke clearly and confidently.
I began to question how much of the way these two people were presenting themselves was accurate to their true nature. Was the girl being interviewed always so professional, or when she went home would her personality completely change? Is the man interviewing her always so intimidating? Or is he secretly very insecure? In a world where first impressions mean so much I can only assume that especially for a job interview, the personality we present is the very best version of ourselves, and not necessarily the truth.
