Today when I was eating lunch in our “lovely” Caesar Rodney dining hall I figured it would be the perfect spot to observe people. I grabbed an oddly sweet tasting grilled ham and cheese, sat down and got to work.
The first group of people who stood out to me was three girls sitting next to me. They all sat there staring blankly into their phones and occasional stabbing at their salads. I would assume they were friends but they were not even acknowledging each other let alone talking to each other. To me it seems like a waste to take the time to get together to have lunch just not to talk each other.
Starkly contrasting was some students sitting at one of the half booths. None of their phones were in sight and they were conversating. A fun time seemed to be had as they were laughing and smiling. It was refreshing to see this group as the girls from before was quite sad to watch. Humans, specifically people our age have become quite sucked into their phones to the point where they do not even interact when they are face to face.
The last group of students I watched as I enjoyed some coffee ice cream was two guys and a girl. One of the guys and the girl were on their phones, the other girl was not. The girl who was not looked annoyed at the two on their phones, giving sly looks at them. I felt this group was the most important as it showed the main difference between humans these days. Some can put down the phone and enjoy the moment while others are inept to do this.
