There is no life without communication. While sitting in total silence you begin to think about how you interact with each other. I was immediately drawn to my interactions with friends. During normal interactions, we sit around the dorm in a makeshift circle discussing everything happening in our day- from classes to how much we are looking forward to the weekend. This form of interaction brings out the best in our personalities, our stories we share, and laughs we have, all bring a sense of relaxation to our overly stressful days.
Now I look towards my more professional interactions, with professors and TA’s. Those interactions are what I would classify as awkward. Constantly trying to impress my professor leaves me stuttering, sweating, and sounding dumber than I am. Another form of communication I come across on a college campus is with strangers. This communication is the most strange of all. Often most the strangers are off in their own world, consumed by their electronic devices, too bothered to give me full attention. Mostly it’s because we are consumed with our daily lives, worrying about our personal and school lives. When one is up to their eyeballs in school work related stress the last thing they want to do is interact with some random person.
When I look back on my communication with others it makes me reflect upon myself. How can I improve things? How can I be more relaxed and less awkward in conversations? These are all the questions we strive to answer every time we interact with another human, cause without communication humans are not people.
