College is one of the most exciting times in our lives, but it can also be one of the most stressful. Finding time for yourself is one of the most important things a college student can do. The hard part about this is actually finding the time to do it.

For this assignment I interviewed five people in my residence hall. I decided to ask each person the same questions. I thought this would give a more accurate idea of how people are doing on campus.

Mental health is a topic that should be discussed all across campus. Many students feel that they don’t have anyone to talk to about their health. This is a very serious problem that college students face on a daily basis. While asking people in my building my questions, it was hard not to place myself in their shoes. I found myself pondering these questions and how I would have answered them.

During my first semester I had a professor that said “making time for yourself is the most important thing to do in college.” I decided to use this and ask the people I interviewed how they made time for themselves. One specific answer stuck out to me. “How can I make time for myself if I don’t even have time to do my school work.” This is an actual problem that many people on campus face. Many try to balance school work, a social life, and a work life. This seems to be next to impossible to do.

I felt that the most important thing to ask was if they felt comfortable reaching out for help. I was relieved that all five of the people I had interviewed said yes. I then proceeded to ask if they knew where to go for help on campus. Many people knew of the resource center, but didn’t know where it was. I think it’s important to note that my next quote comes from a freshman male. I had asked him where he would go if he was experiencing problems with his mental health. “ I honestly don’t know where I would go. I wouldn’t feel comfortable talking to my friends about it.” The negative connotation that comes with mental health and masculinity affects males on campus. If one person was unsure where to go. I am certain more feel that way.

The final question I had asked was, “do you think UD has adequate mental health services?” I really liked an answer from one of the girls I interviewed. “Some of my friends have gone to counseling here and they seemed to like it.” I think it’s important to point out that many people have used the resources here and have benefited from them.

Concluding my interviews I found that many people on campus need to make time for themselves. Whether this be for a couple minutes or a couple hours. I also think it’s important that people know how to and where to reach out for help if they experience any sort of problem.
