For the past couple of months I’ve worked at Formal Affairs on Main Street. My regular routine is to dress and make sure everything is put together for the customers. Depending on the day, it can be extremely busy or it can be just a day where you don’t get up from the chair. During those days that are super slow, I stare at these mannequins. Not knowing that I can use these three mannequins to help me describe the three people who I interviewed for this assignment.
The first person I interviewed was a very sophisticated man and very overqualified for what his job currently is. He graduated from Boston University with 4 majors and then continued to go Yale to get 2 masters in philosophy and theology. I asked him the two questions that I planned on asking: How important is your mental and physical health to you? He told me that his mental health is very important to him since he had been depressed since the 3rd grade without knowing. And that he has been blessed with good physical health since his family has a history of healthy genes. However he does smoke cigarettes and is an insomniac. He finished the interview with a quote of “as long as you try to put yourself first sometimes, you can always get through any challenge.”
The second person I interviewed was a student and a good friend of mine. She went to a local highschool near me in Delaware but we have recently become good friends since we are planning to live together next year. To me, she always has a good attitude and has a very vibrant attitude. I asked her the same questions and she hesitated which made me think that she has not thought about it before. After her deep breath she continued to tell me that her mental health is more important to her than her physical health. Her reasoning behind this is because you can’t see it, you can’t open someone’s mind just by looking at their brain and reading it.
The last person I interviewed was a quick interaction with someone I sat next to at a coffee shop. I didn’t know her name but she obviously looked like an older college student. I asked her the same questions, she first told me that schools should emphasize the importance more. Then she told me that she had never had any big problems with any of them but she has had friends go through chronic depression and serious injuries. She believes that it is very important to her and even though she doesn’t have problems with it, it’s good to check up every now and then.
Mental and physical health are important to everyone, some more than others. Looking around the store and looking at the mannequins that are dressed differently represent different kinds of people. You see how they are dressed but you don’t know their values, thoughts, and feelings. I learned from this lesson that never judging a book by its cover should be emphasized more.
