The economy is something people either think of all the time or not at all. Some people keep track of the stock market and employment rate while others put it out of mind. While interviewing five people around campus I found this to be true.

    For this assignment I decided to ask questions based on what kind of economy the United States is. For my first question I asked people what kind of economy the United States has. What response stood out to me. “I didn’t know there were different types of economies.” I looked up at the girl quite startled. Was she joking or was she serious? I guess I never thought that people are unsure about the economy. I thought most United States citizens would know that we have a mixed economy. That’s one of the first things you learn in any standard economics class in high school.

    I then decided to move on and ask about the stock market. I proceeded to ask if they knew that the stock market had a crash recently. Look of worry spread across some of the faces. The guy I was interviewing commented, “I don’t normally keep up with the stock market so I had no idea.” I felt quite mutual with this statement because I had only known about the stock market crash from hearing other people talk about it. I feel like a lot of people in college don’t trade stocks and keep up with it on a daily basis. I know that there are some exceptions to this, but it’s not very common.

    For my last question I asked one that seemed more general. I asked all five interviewees if they knew what kind of career they wanted to go into. Many of them didn’t know exactly what they wanted to do, but they had a broad idea. They knew they wanted to do something in either business or with animals or in education. It varies from person to person. The last person I had asked gave me the quote I was looking for. “ I don’t know what I want to do, but I know I want to make a lot of money.” I feel that many people that are pressured into going to college feel this way. They don’t know what they wanna do in life.Their main focus is a future salary. I feel that this might lead to people being unhappy in a career they picked, because they only did it for the salary the job promised.

    After concluding my five interviews. I found that my thesis was correct. People don’t know much about our economy, but they know that they want to be a part of it. They want to make money and be successful in the country we live in.
