Most of us go to school to have a job after. The question that I asked was, Did you choose your major with a job in mind?

I got many different questions depending on what major they are pursing, for this reason, I interviewed enough people to have five different majors.

The business major had a rough idea about what he wanted to do after college. He chose to go into business because it worked with a lot of things post-college but he ideally wanted to go into a large innovative firm. He chose UD because of the great business program but went in business undeclared so he can keep his options open if he does change his mind.

The nursing major knew that she wanted to be a physician office nurse so that she could work with children. She knew from very young that she wanted to do this and therefore she is going through all the hard courses to do it. She also knew of the “great job security that comes from a nursing job” because of the shortage of nurses. She was the one who knew the most about what she wanted to do after college and therefore was one of the smartest.

The Political Science major knew nothing about what he wanted to do. This is the stereotype of most political science majors and with him, it was very true. He even said that he came for “rowing, great parties and a bit of education”. He knew that political science majors can go into law school or pursue an MBA after college but didn’t have a solid job in mind, probably because his family was paying for his entire tuition.

The Mechanical engineering and Biomedical engineering majors knew that they wanted to go into very innovative and lucridus jobs but didn’t name a specific job. They knew that if they put in the work required through college, they would find a good high paying job. I am always surprised when I hear about the amount of work that these guys have every single week compared to mine, and how driven they are to complete their four years with a great job at the end.

All the people I interviewed are definitely smart because they all got into UD but in my mind, those who have a definite job they want to go ino after college will probably be very successful.
