The question that seems to be on everyone’s mind is, how are you doing? To be quite frank I’m bored. The change from having a busy college life to having to stay at home is huge. Not having that social interaction that many people crave is very hard. It has begun to feel like days are blending together. On the bright side I’ve been able to walk my dog everyday. That’s the one upside of being home.

During this free time I’ve decided to be productive. For the longest time I wanted to do something to better the environment. One of my favorite animals is the otter. With this I decided to create a company where part of the profit goes to an organization that supports sea otters.

    The mission statement follows:

The Otter Way was founded to make a difference. The otter is a fundamental part of the kelp forest ecosystem. In areas that once flourished with otter populations have come to know devastation. Otters are predators of sea urchins. Without this process in the food chain, urchins will burden the sea floor.

These urchins ruin the balance of the kelp forest ecosystem, leading to a major deduction of important habitats. Within this habitat many exotic fish and marine mammals live. Without the protection of otters, kelp has no chance to maximize its growth.

In order to support the fight in helping the otter population, The Otter Way was founded. Not only are we supporting the otters, but a whole ecosystem. This is why we donate 10 percent of net proceeds to Friends of the sea otters (seaotters.org).

    The website is www.theotterway.org

Creating this business has given me something exciting to do while quarantined. I’m happy I can do something for one of my favorite marine animals. Doing this not only gives an opportunity to improve one species life, but a whole ecosystem.
