I saw this weed/flower on the side of the road while I was on a walk and it turns out to be a Deadnettle. This is a poem relating to the flower and its name.
As the spring comes around
I expand from the ground
This year has made me confused
A few weeks too early I have bloomed
Soon our four seasons will blend into one
And you will regret all of the damage you have done
Eventually your actions will be lasting and irreversible
And your effects will surely be discernible
It’s not too often that you’re given a warning in advance
So change your plan of action to give our world a chance
Act quickly and do not play with Earth’s mortality
Or my name will become a reality

I love this poem. I have been thinking a lot lately about climate change’s effect on phenology and think this poem accurately portrays a lot of what is going on with our environment. I thought the line “Act quickly and do not play with Earth’s mortality. Or my name will become a reality” was really strong and gets your point across effectively. I also enjoy that your poem is from a plant’s point of view.

I loved reading your poem. I felt you had written all the lines very strongly and passionately. I think my favorite part of the whole poem was how you had written it in the plants point of view. It was different from the rest of the pieces I have read and I really liked it.

This poem is very intriguing to read because I feel as though it can be interpreted in many different ways. My personal favorite line is the last one “Or my name will become a reality.” This stands out to me because the name of the plant is dead-nettle, and with everything going on in the world, it only seems fitting. I also appreciated the consistency of your rhyming scheme.

Very well written poem! It speaks volumes, the last line “or my name will become a reality” really spoke to me as the name of the plant is “deadnettle.” Its saddening to think how much people negatively effect climate. It is important to recognize these things. Overall, I enjoyed the flow of your poem and like the message you took with it.
