The Aubrieta flower- the only flower present in my garden during this rainstorm. Going into this assignment I had no prior information on this plant. I had never thought much of it. During this time every year the aubrieta flower blooms throughout my garden. I had always brushed it off as a weed.
The aubrieta carpets my garden as it pokes out of the dark colored mulch. Every year the same process takes place. When the rose bushes begin to bloom the aubrieta must be cut back. If this step in the process is not completed, the flower becomes a nuisance.
The flower will grow out of control. It then starts spreading, while it does this it wraps around the necks of the other plants. Strangling the rose bushes. The roses fight for root space. To save the roses the aubrieta must be pulled from the ground.
The ripping of the roots of the aubrieta is satisfying.
The true beauty of the garden can finally be showcased.
The day is fast approaching. The day where the aubrieta either gets to live in harmony or be uprooted and tossed away. I personally would like to see the two plants live in peace, but this has yet to happen.
I’m curious about where these flowers came from, because I had never planted them before. My theory is they had seeded in a different plant that was purchased. Hitching a ride to our house and later being planted with no hesitation.
I thought your piece had a very nice, unique rhythm that fit the mood well, especially those two one-sentence paragraphs in the middle. I also loved how you used action words like “strangling”, “carpets”, and “fight” to describe how the plants don’t always coexist in your garden. Regarding the end of your piece, it was really cool to visualize those Aubrieta seeds accidentally getting brought home with you. It’s a shame they won’t leave the roses alone!

I really liked reading this Vienna. I like how you start out viewing them as a weed, but then you thought about them more and realize that they have value too. Your contradiction of saying you like ripping the aubrietas out but wishing them and the roses could live together was really interesting.

I really enjoyed the way you made the two statements, The ripping of the roots of the aubrietia is satisfying…The true beauty of the garden can finally be showcased,” stand out. Those are two powerful lines that really help convey your message of how the flower is seemingly fighting for a spot in the landscape of your backyard. I felt as though you made the flower sound very human like which is interesting.

I find it funny how this plant has been a constant on your garden but has always been overlooked. Just goes to highlight how much goes unnoticed sometimes, right under our noses. I also think that the flowers are really pretty and it’s a shame that they can’t live together in harmony with your roses
