I was extremely fortunate to get the exact schedule I wanted for this semester. I was looking forward to having my classes at the ideal times for me. The first few weeks of the semester were extremely smooth, but we got sent home due to the COVID-19 outbreak. I do want to write about how I shouldn’t take anything for granted, but this semester has actually taught me two more valuable lessons.

The first thing I learned was how much more of a flexible learner I am. When Zoom and online learning were first introduced to me, I was honestly a bit apprehensive about the transition. I came to learn that the new technologies were easier to navigate than I thought. I am more of a visual, in-person learner, so my second concern with the transition as if I was actually going to retain the information that I learned in my online classes. Not only was I able to learn the material, but I was able to bring my GPA up from last semester.

The second thing I learned was to always look at the bright side of things. The semester was stopped short which caused me to miss out on a lot of things both in the classroom and out. However, I was able to be home during Easter, a holiday I wouldn’t have been able to celebrate with my family had I still been at school. While I was home, I also, unfortunately, got mono, which I believe I got while still at school. I’m not sure how I would’ve managed my pain and symptoms at school and without my parents’ help. Last, I was able to start working a month and a half earlier than I usually do which is helpful because assuming we’re back next semester, I’ll need spending money.

While everyone was robbed of their Spring 2020 semesters, there was good that came out of it. Regardless of what everyone learned in and out of the classroom, the most important lesson that we need to focus on in the next few weeks (or months) is to continue good hand washing and social distancing. I hope everyone and their families stay safe these next few months.
