This poem is an altered version of a poem that I wrote when I lead a retreat for my high school known as Kairos. I felt compelled to post it here because I have found myself thinking a great deal about Kairos during our current situation. During Kairos, you learn that everything happens for a reason and that often its the moments of deepest darkness that lay the foundation for the moments of brightest joy. I have found myself struggling with this lately, worrying about the future and how this will all work out. This poem helps to remind me that things will be okay and that we can handle whatever is thrown our way. That perhaps this moment of darkness will lead to great joy in the future.
Waves
The waves do not think
And yet they crash to shore
Exactly when they are meant too
Not a moment too soon
Not a moment more
I find comfort in knowing I am small
that in the grand scheme of life
moments of fear and failure wont matter at all
that each day I will wake up
and crash against whatever shore
I am truly meant for.

The structure of this poem mimics one of a Kairos so well. Also your poem is really beautiful and puts all of our situations into words really nicely. When you said, “Moments of fear and failure won’t matter at all.” This is a really powerful line because it really displays how our feelings are so big to us at the moment but are so miniscule in the grand scheme of things.

Brianna,
I went on Kairos too in high school and found myself thinking about it recently. This poem really sums up some of the major points of the retreat. I really enjoyed the lines “I find comfort in knowing I am small.” I also really enjoyed the metaphor of waves crashing on a shore where you are the wave.

I really like the sentiment and story behind the poem. It is not something completely new but instead you circled back to a time prosperity. Using this to grow strength and hope, building a re-invented poem. As for the poem itself its very well written with lines 8-9 being my favorite.

The subtle rhyme at the end really caught my eye and I found myself reading over it again and again going through your whole poem. I found it very well written and structured. It was really nice how the waves seemed to be given a life but that life was also taken away in the very beginning!

I am a strong strong believer in the phrase, “Everything happens for a reason.” And this poem is so well written that I explains the weird answer to why everything happens for a reason. I loved the part where it says, “Not a moment too soon, not a moment more.” That shows that everything is meant to be the way that it comes, just like waves!
